Seeking a co-op home

Howdy! I'm looking for temporary, co-op-ish housing in a major US city near good public transit and friends. I'm particularly looking at Boston, NYC, and DC, though I'm entirely flexible.

Hopefully I'll be getting a visa to live in London with my partner Alex, but I need a place to live in the US in the meantime.

A very major part of what keeps me happy and healthy is a warm home life, so I'm looking for something that's co-op-ish. I'd prefer to live in a house with other friendly, interesting, well-communicating, queer-friendly people. Think e.g. group meals when schedules mesh, sharing food & equipment, enjoyable conversations, working together on house needs, etc., balanced with privacy when desired.

I'm looking to move around July 29 2015 (with about two backpacks' worth of stuff), stay for a few months (basically until UKBA gives me a visa, or to figure out wtf to do for the next year if they don't; might be anywhere from a couple weeks to ~3 months), live with Alex until fall 2016, and then go to law school.

Right now, I'm working primarily on launching Make Your Laws, a non-profit to systemically improve our political system. Unfortunately, it's not paying me a salary yet, so I'm on a pretty tight budget.

To run down the usual roommate-question stuff:

I really enjoy intellectual conversations (especially about systemic political issues, languages, psychology, empathy, etc); see e.g. my Google+ stream and essays.

I don't smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, or eat meat. I don't mind if others do, but I prefer not to have tobacco smoke indoors or be around loud frat-type parties. (I enjoy the more mellow sort however — eg talking politics, potlucks, salons, game or movie nights, etc. I like having meaningful conversations; it's being overwhelmed by a lot of superficial interaction that I dislike.)

I've recently been starting to learn guitar by playing Rocksmith, and I'd also like to start playing the piano again (I played seriously for a long time, but haven't done so in a while). I like cooking and eating unusual (vegetarian) things (e.g. strawberry / ume plum vinegar ice cream).

I'm medium-low mess (random paper stacks on my desk yes, old food no), and would like some reasonable split of chore duties. I do better when they're done together with others (I tend to just forget, and it's easier when I'm not alone), and when I can trade doing things whose smell or texture squicks me (like handling garbage or slimy things) in favor of those that I'm good at (organizing, sorting, shopping, cleaning most dishes with a sponge-on-a-stick, cooking [especially together with others], etc).

Being in a quiet residential area with good neighborhood walkability / public transit accessibility would be nice. (It's also nice to have parks, good food, etc nearby.)

I can converse in American Sign Language, Russian, French, & Spanish, and it's nice to get to use 'em (especially ASL).

I'm perfectly fine with whatever amount of clothing others prefer to wear (or not), but usually prefer not to be nude around others myself. I like platonic hugs/cuddles, and it'd be nice (though hardly required) to have that kind of friendship with my housemates. FWIW, I'm a professionally trained massage therapist (~400 hours' worth), and am happy to trade massage for skritches (or massage, which I can teach).
